CHENNAI: Ten people died after a wall collapsed during heavy rains in Tamil Nadu. Owing to continued rain, holiday was declared for schools and colleges in districts like Tirunelveli and Tenkasi. Officials also informed that train traffic will be disrupted in southern districts. Railways has released the information of canceled trains and delayed trains. Nagercoil-Kanyakumari Express special train service has been completely cancelled.

Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena informed that the deceased are from districts like Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi.

A special team of the Indian Army has reached Srivaikuntam to carry out relief operations, while Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and apprised him of the situation in the state. Stalin has submitted an application to declare the heavy rains and damage caused in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu as a national disaster and to provide relief to the people.


"Funds will be sought from National Disaster Relief Fund as emergency relief. Tamil Nadu has faced two consecutive calamities. Prime Minister will be requested to release funds as soon as possible.", MK Stalin told the media.

"Rs 7,300 crores have been requested as aid and 12,000 crores as permanent aid. Rs. 6000 has been announced as relief for the flood victims. It is being distributed. It can be completed only after receiving the relief fund from the Prime Minister," he added.
