criminal-law-bills

NEW DELHI: Taking the suspension of the majority of opposition MPs as a blessing, the Lok Sabha passed the Criminal Law Amendment Bills without any opposition hindrance on Wednesday. Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Samhita and Bharatiya Saksya Bills were passed by the central government to reform the criminal laws.

After withdrawing and amending the bills introduced in August, Union Home Minister Amit Shah tabled them as new bills in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The changes were applied to IPC, CrPC and the Indian Evidence Act. According to the amendment, death penalty will now be imposed for mob violence.

Home Minister Amit Shah said that the existing sedition law was amended in a way that it would be treated as a crime done not just against the government but against the country. The home minister said that protecting fundamental rights and ensuring justice is the basic objective of the new laws.

According to the home minister, the new laws espouse Indian ideology in its truest sense and will help the people of the country get out of the shackles of the colonial system.
