THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An Urban Policy Commission has been appointed to submit proposals to transform the rapidly developing Kerala into a single city by 2030. The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Kollam on Tuesday. The formation of the commission was announced in the last state budget. This is the first commission to be formed in the country specifically for this purpose.

Dr. M. Satish Kumar, Senior Associate Professor at Queen's University, Belfast, UK, is the Chairman of the Thirteen Member Commission. The precautions to be taken and the developmental approaches should be submitted to the government within one year time.

Apart from the developmental plans, guidelines to be taken for the coming 25 years should also be prepared. The policy will be formulated in adherence with the framework of the central draft urban policy. The proposal was made in the last Union Budget.

The Study Centre of Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA) will be turned into the Commission Secretariat. Rebuild Kerala, a project associated with the German development bank KFW, will be used for Grand Commission work on the Kerala Solid Waste Management Project and the Amrit Project.
