The much-anticipated Sabarimala airport project is gaining momentum as the Union Ministry of Forests and Environment has confirmed the suitability of land at Cheruvanchi Estate. The Revenue Department swiftly issued an order for the acquisition of 2405 acres including 165 acres of private land, from the Cheruvanchi Estate located in Erumeli South and Manimala villages. This step marks a significant stride toward the realization of the Sabarimala airport dream cherished by devotees and residents across three districts in the eastern part of the state.

Revenue Minister K Rajan highlighted the importance of an expert committee's recommendations, emphasizing the project's favourable impact on the state and its people. The committee's call for a comprehensive rehabilitation package to ensure social justice is a pivotal aspect aiming to avoid past grievances faced by displaced individuals due to unfulfilled promises during such projects.

Moreover, Minister Rajan stressed the need to avoid repetition of past issues encountered during the implementation of similar projects. He urged proactive measures to fulfill commitments made to displaced persons and proposed the consideration of providing job opportunities to qualified individuals affected by land acquisition.

Although named Sabarimala Airport, the facility primarily caters to expatriates from Idukki, Pathanamthitta, and Kottayam districts. However, with its establishment, an influx of devotees from North India is anticipated during the Mandal period. To accommodate this growing demand, long-term planning is imperative to address current limitations at Sabarimala.

The impending land acquisition necessitates thorough verification of land records and surveys before the final notification. Given the potential for disputes and obstacles, the Revenue Department must engage an experienced team for this complex process. Minister Rajan suggested the creation of a parallel mechanism to swiftly address disputes involving affected people and property owners potentially utilizing retired chiefs from diverse departments for this purpose.

The modern era's efficiency in project execution where constructions once taking years now complete within months, should guide the swift realization of the Sabarimala airport. Minister Rajan emphasized the urgency of implementing necessary steps promptly to expedite the airport project's commencement.

The government's focus now shifts toward seamless land acquisition procedures and effective dispute resolution mechanisms positioning the Sabarimala airport project on a fast track towards realization.
