smuggling

SHANKHUMMUGAM: A 24-year-old man named Mohammad Imran was arrested by the Intelligence Division of Air Customs at the airport for attempting to smuggle gold worth 49 lakhs. He hails from Thirunelveli, Kadayanellur, Tamil Nadu.

The Assistant Commissioner of Air Customs led the operation after receiving intel about a passenger arriving on an Air India Express flight from Abu Dhabi who was suspected of gold smuggling. Rigorous checks were implemented including luggage inspections and X-ray scans upon the passengers' arrival.

Imran tried to outsmart the security measures by concealing approximately 800 grams of gold in four capsules ingesting them to avoid detection during the checks. Despite passing through immigration without raising suspicion, Imran was apprehended by customs officials afterward.

Initial tests including X-rays failed to reveal any traces of gold. However, following a thorough interrogation, Imran confessed to carrying gold within his stomach. Subsequently, a medical team assisted in extracting the gold from his body.
