suspended

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Three duty policemen were suspended in the incident where Mahilamorcha activists forced themselves into the official residence of the DGP which is heavily guarded and staged a sit-in protest.

Action has been taken against Muralidharan Nair, Mohammad Shebin and Sajin of the Rapid Response and Rescue Force (RRRF), who are in charge of security at the residence.

The RRRF Assistant Commandant, who conducted the investigation, rejected the policemen's claim that they opened the gate thinking that the protestors were actually complainants. Complaints are not accepted at DGP's house. According to the report, it was irresponsible to open the gate without knowing who had come and without consulting the higher officials or the DGP's staff. The argument of the policemen that they could not stop the protestors due to the absence of women police officers was also not accepted. It was also alleged that the intelligence warning that there would be a protest against the DGP was taken lightly. Battalion DIG Rahul R Nair has suspended the trio citing that this lapse has tarnished the image of the force and the armed police headquarters. RRRF Deputy Commandant was tasked to investigate in detail and submit a report.

The incident happened last Saturday at 9.30 am. The Mahila Morcha protest alleged that the police conspired in the Vandiperiyar POCSO case to allow the accused to escape.
