THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Adani Group has prepared a plan to demolish the domestic airport terminal at Shangumugham and build a new terminal that will be technically superior. The airport will be renovated to suit the passengers' needs and will be sufficient to cope with the changing world until 2070. The international terminal at Chackai will be expanded to 500,000 square feet.

The airport authoritiy have sought permission from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security to create a separate zone for domestic passengers. The plan is to demolish the domestic terminal next year. During the renovation period, all domestic flights will take off from the international terminal in Chackai. In 2023, 13 lakh domestic passengers were reported in Thiruvananthapuram.

The airport sees 15000 passengers daily. Minding more services and the overhaul to be done, the Adani group has decided to renovate the domestic terminal.

There are also plans to build a five-star hotel in front of the international airport. A multi-storied five-star hotel will rise in the parking area in front of the international terminal. All major airports have such airport hotels.

A hotel with 240 rooms and 660 catering facilities will be built. The airport is situated on 628.70 acres of land. Space limitation is the main obstacle to the development of the airport.
