THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Shehna Shaji of Vandithadam, who committed suicide in Thiruvallom the other day, was subjected to brutal harassment at her husband Noufal’s house. She told a private channel that she was subjected to brutal mental and physical harassment.
‘Her mother-in-law used to harass her mentally even for minor issues. This was supported by her father-in-law. Recently she was subjected to severe physical harassment. They hit her head, pulled her hair and beat her. Unable to bear the harassment, she video called me, then her mother-in-law grabbed the phone from her hand and threatened to kill her. After some time, Noufal called us and asked us to reach the hospital immediately. When we reached the hospital, we found that she was subjected to brutal harassment. She had injuries on her face and lips. There were bite injuries on her thighs and hands,’ said her mother.
Shehna’s mother said that when they decided to file a complaint about the incident, Noufal said that he would do something if the outside world came to know about it. The two got married during Covid time. No dowry was demanded then. However, six months after the wedding, her in-laws started harassing her mentally and physically, alleged her mother.
Shehna was found dead at her home at around 4 pm last evening. She was staying with her parents for the past three months due to problems at her husband's house. Her husband Noufal asked her to attend a private function at his house yesterday. However, Shehna was not willing to go. Following that, Noufal came home and forcibly took their one and a half old month baby home. Soon after she entered the room, closed the door and committed suicide. A case has been registered by the Thiruvallom police. The visuals of Shehna subjected to harassment have surfaced.
The statement of Shehna's family members will be taken today. Noufal’s family will be interrogated after that. The body of the woman will be handed over to her relatives today after post-mortem.
