KOCHI: The Ernakulam Special Court sentenced Sanu Mohan to life imprisonment for killing his 11-year-old daughter Vaiga and imposed a fine of Rs 1,70,000. He smothered the child to death and then dumped the body into the Muttar River. The Ernakulam Special Court pronounced the quantum of sentence this afternoon. All the charges against the accused were proved. He was sentenced to life for the murder and fine of Rs one lakh was imposed on him. He was sentenced to 28 years of rigorous imprisonment in other cases. The court had earlier found him guilty in the case.
Sanu Mohan pleaded for a lenient sentence as there was no one else to take care of his 70-year-old mother, but the court did not pay heed to it. After finding him guilty, the verdict was pronounced at 2.30 pm after hearing the arguments on the sentence from 11 am. It was a rarest of rare crime and the prosecution sought death penalty.
Vaiga was found dead on March 22 in 2021. The case is that he smothered the child to death and then dumped the body in the Muttar River near Kalamassery. The charge sheet filed by Thrikakkara Inspector K Dhanapalan said that Sanu Mohan killed Vaiga and went into hiding because of his anger towards his wife, excessive love for his daughter and as a strategy to escape from the debt trap.
