THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Binoy Viswam will step in as CPI's new state secretary succeeding the late senior leader Kanam Rajendran. Viswam was elected unopposed during the party's state executive meeting where this matter was discussed.

If no other candidates surface, the state council meeting scheduled for tomorrow will propose Binoy Viswam's name. Following Kanam Rajendran's passing, Viswam was initially appointed as the interim secretary.

The state council is set to officially endorse the appointment of the new secretary tomorrow, aligning with Rajendran's wish conveyed in a letter before his leave due to declining health. Meanwhile, Mullakkara Ratnakaran, who took over from Pathanamthitta district secretary AP Jayan who was suspended by the party over alleged financial fraud has resigned from the post. CP Sasidharan, a party state executive member has assumed the responsibilities.

Ratnakaran declined the secretary position due to intense factionalism within the district which emerged when he was to replace Jayan.
