THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A father while taking his daughter to a riverside encountered a gang consuming alcohol. Like every dutiful man, he approached the youths and confronted them with a police case if they continued drinking alcohol in public places. Little did he know that the gang would come back to haunt him later. On Tuesday night, the youths reached his house and asked him to accompany them to the road nearby for ‘some talks’. Without any hanging back, the man went along with the gang to the road. The youths then morphed to their bestial side and brutally attacked the man who got knocked out in seconds. In the shocking visuals, one among the gang can be seen kicking the man’s head while he lay unconscious on the road.

In another incident, a bus driver created a ruckus in the middle of the road in Kozhikode and attacked a car owner after the latter questioned the bus driver's reckless driving. Much like the theme of the hit movie, 'Thallumala', Kerala is now replete with street fights that have now turned into a social media frenzy.

The trend has transpired in such a way that a petty verbal exchange could lead to a street fight in minutes. Nobody will care to intrude but would like to have a good time enjoying the scuffle. People trying for a truce will also end up joining the fight.

Many of the new generation hit movies that have come out recently have espoused such themes. 'Thallumala', 'RDX', ‘Ajagajantaram’, ‘Angamali Diaries’, ‘Porinchu Mariyam Jose’, and ‘King of Kotha’ are a bevvy of movies that follow the similar theme of street fights and violence.

According to Psychologists, movies can’t be held solely culpable for inviting such trends in Kerala but their impact should not ignored. The concerning drug use and the cultural shift witnessed across Kerala have many things to do with movies of today’s time.

Some students try to emulate the fight sequence scene in popular movies and fall into trouble. For them, it is sassy stuff to fight in the middle of the road like seen in Theatre screens. Somebody would be filming the act and the same gets lakhs of views if uploaded on a social media page. The travesty has now gone beyond all repair as people who engage in such fights are now vaingloriously posting the fight sequence on their social media pages. The comments too support their act which makes them engage in more such violence.
