Captain Vijayakanth always played a titular role in the Cine Workers Association and engaged in a perennial battle for the rights and welfare of its members. Albeit doing more than 150 films, not even once did Vijayakanth agree to do one film outside the Tamil film industry.

Many people don’t know the fact that the Nadigar Sangam in Tamil Nadu turned into such an established space only for the work meted out by Captain Vijayakanth. The Nadigar Sangam was founded in 1952 with the support of actors MGR, Shivaji Ganesan and MR Radha. But later due to various reasons, the Nadigar Sangam ended up in debt of Rs.4.5 crores. It was Vijayakanth's strategic decision that saved the Nadigar association from going bankrupt.

S A Chandrasekhar, director and father of actor Vijay, revealed in a recent interview how actor Vijayakanth helped shipshape Vijay’s career.

“My son Vijay's first film was a flop. So, I thought that if Vijayakanth and Vijay came together for a film, it would be a big boost for my son's career. I informed captain about this idea and discussed his remuneration. However, captain asked to proceed with the movie without confirming the payment. The movie ‘Sendhoorapandi’ was a huge success and gave mileage to Vijay. If not for Vijayakanth's help, Vijay couldn’t have attained such success with ease.” said SA Chandrasekhar.
