thiruvananthapuram-city-s

It may seem rather surprising as late actor Vijayakanth carried a rare penchant for Thiruvananthapuram city. Thampanoor, Kovalam, Chackai and Pazhavangadi are all Vijayakanth's favourite getaway spots in the capital city. It was during his nascent stage in films that Vijayakanth visited the capital city often. He took a train just to be in Kerala’s capital city whenever he felt like it. He would approach producers and directors in Thiruvananthapuram in the hope of getting some roles in movies. However, the filmmakers were apprehensive about casting a dark-skinned actor in their film.

In his later years, after achieving success, Vijayakanth chanced upon the same directors who once denied him the role. Rather than confronting them, the actor gave them all respect and behaved with probity. There is also one story of Vijayakanth surrounding Thiruvananthapuram that just resides within film circles.

Vijayakanth's father was a rice mill owner. His Madurai childhood friend Sundararajan's sister Muthulakshmi's house was on Chalai Pillayar Koil Lane. Jyoti Jewellery Mart was a well-known establishment in Thiruvananthapuram at that time. It was owned by Muthulakshmi's husband Kannan. The shop was also bustling with customers and the business also went well. However, calamity doomed one day as Muthulakshmi’s husband Kannan died young in a shocking incident. The shop was also on the verge of going down when Vijayakanth spent Rs 7 lakh from his account to buy it. However, in later years, with nobody to take control, the shop had to be closed.

During his teenage days, Vijayakanth visited Thiruvananthapuram during every Onam season. He would be seated inside the shop enjoying the rush of the city and the mildly cooler temperature than what he had in Madurai. Vijayakanth used to watch all the movies released in those days from theatres in Thiruvananthapuram. Sreekumar Theater was his favourite.
