NEW DELHI: Congress leader and technologist Sam Pitroda expressed apprehensions regarding the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He suggested that if issues related to electronic voting machines (EVMs) remain unresolved, BJP could secure as many as 400 seats. Pitroda highlighted the recommendations of a non-governmental organization (NGO) chaired by former Supreme Court Chief Justice Madan Lokur urging modifications to the current functioning of the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) system. However, he indicated that the Election Commission had not responded adequately to these concerns, prompting him to speak openly on the matter.

Pitroda emphasized the continuous demand from opposition parties, including the Congress for increased transparency in the use of EVMs amid allegations of tampering in favour of BJP. Despite the Election Commission dismissing such allegations, the Congress leadership has persistently raised these issues, especially after the BJP's victories in recent northern state elections.

Touching upon the sensitive topic of the Ram temple, Pitroda advocated for individuals' autonomy in religious matters, asserting that such celebrations should remain personal choices without political interference. He stressed the importance of separating religious celebrations from political motives.
