THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala University Syndicate meeting decided not to remove the banner mocking the Governor in front of the University of Kerala. Nine people, including the government representatives, who participated in the meeting were of the opinion that the banner should not be removed. VC Dr Mohanan Kunnummal was isolated in the face of the majority opinion that the democratic protest of the students should not be stopped.
The VC had instructed the registrar to remove the banner but it was not implemented. The matter came to yesterday's syndicate following that. The meeting also decided to leave the petition of the Save University Campaign Committee, that there has been a violation of the order of the High Court prohibiting the hanging of banners in the university campus, for the consideration of the Syndicate Sub-Committee. Discussion of the panel of student representatives to be nominated by the governor to the Senate led to a heated exchange of words at the meeting.
Although the letter by Syndicate member Shijukhan requesting availability of nomination letters was not on the agenda, the matter was discussed in the meeting. VC clarified in the meeting that the names of those recommended by the Governor and the names of the students who filed case against the same in the High Court, have not been given to the Governor.
VC was of the position that the matter cannot be discussed as the case is pending in the High Court. VC informed that the university has not prepared the final list of meritorious students and the list given by the minister has been handed over to the governor as is. VC instructed the registrar to provide the documents requested by Shijukhan.
