THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kochi Metro's Managing Director, Loknath Behra revealed to 'Kerala Kaumudi' that the Delhi Metro Rail is set to deliver an updated project report by January 15 including the inclusion of Thiruvananthapuram airport in the proposed metro rail expansion plan.
This metro initiative aims to significantly enhance travel convenience for passengers facilitating quicker access to key locations such as Thiruvananthapuram Railway Station, Thampanoor Bus Stand, and Technopark. The proposed Karamana-Pallipuram metro line is anticipated to feature a loop circle incorporating the airport and Technopark, thereby potentially ensuring profitability for the Thiruvananthapuram Metro. Leveraging advanced technologies, construction is estimated to conclude within two years.
This development promises a seamless commute for travellers arriving by bus or train from neighbouring districts, offering them a convenient metro connection to the airport. Moreover, international travellers will have an efficient means to reach train and bus stations with their luggage. This initiative also aims to alleviate congestion in the capital by enabling travellers to reach Kazhakoottam and access other districts via buses. Importantly, government officials are also expected to benefit from this enhanced connectivity.
Regarding the metro's route, considerations are underway to place it on pillars within the median of the Kazhakootam-Karode bypass. In certain areas, underground roads might be necessary, pending the geo-technical study by DMRC. A holistic transportation plan encompassing road, rail, air and water transport modes is in the works. Furthermore, potential extensions of the metro to Attingal, Neyyattinkara, and Vizhinjam are being explored, with initial developments seen in infrastructure projects like the Srikariyam, Ulloor and Pattom flyovers.
The establishment of an integrated transport authority is on the horizon, aiming to streamline the public transport system's integration with the metro. Moreover, there is optimism about securing central approval, as Prime Minister Modi's vision involves expanding metro services to 50 cities. Thiruvananthapuram, being a focal point attracts interest from both the Center and the BJP.
The estimated cost for the proposed Pallipuram-Karamana route stands at Rs 4,673 crore. Additionally, extending the metro to Vizhinjam port could be advantageous for foreign tourists arriving on cruise ships, augmenting the region's appeal as a tourist destination.
Behra emphasized, "With metro connectivity reaching the airport, the capital's development is imminent, which is beneficial for passengers."
