BALUSSERY: Plus One student died after being hit by a train while crossing railway tracks on a scooter when he was returning after celebrating New Year with three friends. Adil Farhan (17), son of Civil Police Officer Kannanchery Jamshad of Kozhikode Kasaba Station, died in the accident. The accident took place on the railway track below the Gandhi Road flyover at around 1.10 midnight last night.
Adil had gone with his friends on two scooters to watch the New Year event at Kozhikode Mananchira Ground and Beach around 11 pm on Sunday night. The accident occurred while he was returning home after watching the programs. All roads were jammed with traffic due to the New Year rush. They rode the scooter on the footpath along the track to come to the platform, which can be used only with a ticket. There is no vehicle access through this. Friends were waiting for Adil on the east side of the railway station.
Ernakulam - Lokmanya Tilak Durantho Express hit the scooter while Adil was crossing the railway tracks to quickly reach the national highway from Vellayil. On seeing the scooter on the track, the loco pilot honked continuously and warned of danger, but Adil Farhan could not escape.
In the meantime, the train applied an emergency brake, but Adil was trying to move the scooter forward. The train stopped near Vellayil station, 100 meters away from the accident site. Adil's body got stuck in the engine and was separated below the waist.
Nadakav Station SI Pavithrakumar, Railway Protection Force ASI Nandagopal and Head Constable P Devdas conducted an inquest on the dead body. His body was placed for public viewing at the home at his native Panangad panchayat at 2 pm yesterday and buried at Juma Masjid at 3 pm.
