THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With plans to curb the illegal feeding of stray dogs in localities, 32 people in Thiruvananthapuram came up with a proposal to establish feeding centres for stray dogs in the capital city premises. The municipality tenders hope that the new project will end the illegal feeding of dogs by pet lovers in residential areas, which has turned into a menace for commuters and small children.
The Standing Committee of the Health Department took the decision based on the High Court's earlier directive to introduce feeding spots and allow special passes to people who want to feed stray dogs. The feeding spot idea was considered after many reports emerged about stray dogs getting aggressive when not provided food. The municipality will regularly check whether the centres are functioning efficiently.
Feeding spots will be established avoiding public places like hospitals, schools, bus stands, bus stops etc. The Standing Committee on Health Affairs will determine the location for feeding spots. Health inspectors are assigned to inspect the location of feeding spots and should avoid spots where overcrowding is a possibility. Manveeyam, Vazhuthacaud Forest office area and the Museum premises are selected as primary spots to establish feeder spots.
The centres were founded with the cooperation of organizations like People for Animals and Community Dog Breeders. Ward councillors of particular areas will also be consulted before drawing a final decision on establishing feeding spots.
