AHMEDABAD: A lioness was injured after being hit by a goods train while crossing the tracks near Vijpadi railway station in Amreli district. The incident happened around 5 am today.

The goods train was going from Mahua to Surendranagar. The Gujarat Forest Department said the lioness, estimated to be eight years old, has been shifted to an animal centre for treatment.

The Gujarat government has arranged veterinary doctors, ambulance services, speed breakers, warning boards and patrolling for the safety of the lions.

According to 2020 data, there has been an increase in the number of Asiatic lions in Gujarat between 2015 and 2020. The number of lions increased from 523 in 2015 to 672 by 2020, an increase of 29 percent.
