THODUPUZHA: Even amid the flood of help at Mathew Benny's home in Velliyamattom, the calf that lost its mother cow is still a sad sight. The three-month-old calf of one of the 13 cows that died after eating tapioca skin is roaming the field searching for its mother. The calf that Matthew Benny and his siblings call Alphonsa is wailing at night through the hay field in which its mother once roamed. She is also a favourite of Matthew's sister, Rose Mary. Mathew and his siblings are grieving as they don't know how to pacify her. The dead milch cow called Vellakidavu was very dear to all of them. Vellakidavu was tied to the field on the afternoon of the 31st and untied in the evening. It is in this memory that the calf is still searching the field, Matthew said.
In the meantime, a Gir cow named 'Kareena', given by PJ Joseph MLA, is happily standing in the cow shed. The cow given by Joseph is pregnant. Meanwhile, one dairy cow, two calves, two bulls and four small calves are under treatment. One of the cows and the calf, which are showing physical weakness, are undergoing treatment. The arm vein of the calf called Aishwarya Rani has a weakness. Officials said that it may have been caused by its hand continuously hitting the ground when it was poisoned. Toxins are still remaining in the body. Doctors said that the ones who had difficulty feeding would gradually return to their old condition. CPM district secretary CV Varghese, who reached the home on Tuesday night, assured to supply three cows to the farm. It was announced that the cows would be handed over on Monday morning.
