The decision of the Medical Council to start medical PG courses in government hospitals with facilities is generally welcome. Currently PG courses are allowed only in medical colleges. There are branches of medicine where shortage of skilled doctors is acute. There is a nationwide shortage of doctors specializing in orthopedics, paediatrics, radiology and anesthesia. The National Medical Council has come to the position that PG courses can also be conducted in government hospitals with facilities to train more specialist doctors. This policy change by the Medical Council is beneficial considering the current rush for PG seats.

There is no dearth of government hospitals that have the necessary facilities to start PG courses. There are too many patients and beds. The main problem to be faced will be shortage of teachers. Therefore, if the new decision of the Medical Council is to be effective, there should be a large pool of qualified medical teachers. Infrastructural facilities will have to be increased accordingly in hospitals.

Admission to undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses is now done through a unified system at the national level. Through the new system, it has been possible to eliminate the massive irregularities that existed in the field of medical education.
There was a time when an MBBS seat charged Rs 1 crore or more. PG seats were given by auction. Seats in private medical colleges were reserved for the super rich. This terrible robbery has disappeared with the advent of NEET. Now that the counseling has been unified, irregularities have been avoided there as well.

Private medical colleges have also been forced to follow strict norms. Usually, no one would fall for such a scheme as they would have to face strict measures including barring their admission for two years if they falsified the PG admission process. Similarly, the requirement of advance notification of fee for each PG course will be beneficial for the students. It is also a requirement that applicants for PG course should have acquired aptitude in certain subjects. In addition to proficiency in the field of study, it has been determined that one should also know the essential treatment methods that can save the patient's life in emergency situations.

With the advent of unified counseling method, there is a facility to complete the admission process quickly. Classes can also start earlier. Counseling now takes months instead of weeks. It also has the advantage that there is no missed opportunity as there is uniform counseling across the country.

If we look at the population of the country, there should be hundreds of medical colleges and tens of thousands of doctors. In recent times many relaxations have been made in the norms related to starting medical colleges keeping these things in mind. Every year, thousands of children spend huge sums of money to seek medical colleges abroad when there is no opportunity in the country.
