ALAPPUZHA: The preliminary conclusion in the cattle death incident in Kumarapuram pointed fingers at poisonous grass to have resulted in the tragic incident. It was Attupuram native Bhamini’s three cows that died in one week which evoked suspicion and forced experts to collect samples for testing.
According to Bhamini, the cows' bellies would swell up and they would collapse on the ground and die. They were fed with grass and fodder growing in the nearby stream. Officials of the Animal Welfare Department think that there is a possibility of poisoning from this grass.
“Cows were fed with grass that went by the name 'Katakal'. During earlier times, this grass was not preferred as fodder for cows. The grass contains a thick stem that would have poisonous content during the winter season and is regarded dangerous” said animal experts. Bhamini has a total of thirteen cows and now three of them died.
Earlier this week, 13 cows reared by a student farmer died in Thodupuzha which evoked a big response from people across the state.
