KOZHIKODE: A senior manager hailing from Kozhikode fell victim to an extortion scam losing Rs 40,000 to fraudsters employing AI technology. Using a fake video call featuring his friend's image, the scammers through a phony WhatsApp account requested urgent funds for a fabricated surgery.
The city cybercrime police's thorough investigation exposed a gambling ring in Goa responsible for the scam. The criminals used deep fake technology, disguising the appearance and voice of the victim's friend sourced from social media.
The victim, believing he was assisting his friend's wife's sister in need of urgent surgery transferred the money. However, suspicions arose when further demands for Rs 35,000 were made. Contacting his actual friend confirmed his suspicions of foul play.
Following the investigation, three individuals - Shekh Murthusamia Hayatbhai, Siddesh Anand Karve and Ashok Patil - were arrested and are now remanded in Kozhikode District Jail. Additionally, the primary accused Kaushal Shah is in custody at Tihar Jail.
