DHAKA: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League won a landslide victory for the fifth time in the election on Sunday. Hasina won more than 200 seats out of a total of 300 to ensure the continuity of the government. At the same time, the opposition parties boycotted the election. The government banned the opposition parties as terrorist organizations.
Although Hasina has been praised for leading the country to economic growth, she has also been criticized for human rights violations and her stance towards opposition parties. Awami League did not field candidates in some constituencies in the elections to avoid the same party winning everywhere.
Out of 300 seats, Awami League fielded candidates in 264 seats. It is reported that 204 of them won. The Jatiya Party, which contested alongside Hasina's party won nine seats. Bangladesh cricket team captain Shakib Al Hasan is also one among the winning candidates. Sheikh Hasina won with a majority of nearly two and a half lakh votes.
