MUMBAI: Renowned Hindustani musician Ustad Rashid Khan (55) is no more. He was suffering from cancer and was being treated in a hospital in Kolkata. His health began to deteriorate after an earlier stroke. Rashid Khan was in the hospital for the last one month and was shifted to a ventilator a few days ago as his illness worsened.

Born in Badayum, Uttar Pradesh, Rashid Khan took his first lessons in music from his maternal grand-uncle, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan. Rashid Khan is also the nephew of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. He gave his first concert at the age of 11 and joined the ITC Music Academy in Kolkata at the age of 14. He performed musical programs combining Carnatic, Hindustani and Western music. He was honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2022.

Ustad Rashid Khan belonged to the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana and was the great-grandson of Gharana founder Inayat Hussain Khan. He was married to Soma Khan. His last song was "Chanda Se Chhup ke" for the movie Goldfish composed by Tapas Relia.
