ALAPPUZHA: The House and 5-cent plot of farmer K G Prasad, who recently committed suicide for not getting a loan for rice cultivation, is facing the threat of confiscation. The house and plot located on Kunnumma Thakazhy is facing the threat after Prasad’s wife Omana defaulted on a loan taken from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation. Presently, Omana and her children Adina and Adhinik live here.
Rs 60,000 was taken as a self-employment loan on 27th August 2022. The repayment has been delayed for 11 months. The District Office of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation has warned of confiscating the house and plot if failed to pay the arrear amount of Rs 17,600 within five days.
Prasad (57) committed suicide on November 11, 2023, after failing to acquire a loan of Rs 50,000 to fertilize the leased three-and-a-half acres. Adina came from her husband's house and has been with her mother since then. The family survives with the help of relatives and friends. Omana used to work in MGNREGA before Prasad’s death.
Just 60 days after the incident, Prasad’s brother took over the cultivation but has still not made the money since the harvest will only start after three months. Apart from this, every month, he should pay Rs 11,000 for microfinance institutions and Rs 15,000 for moneylenders.
Minister P Prasad and Ramesh Chennithala promised to bring raise Prasad's issue to the attention of the government, but nothing productive has happened.
“We cannot tolerate the slanderous campaign by some people in social media because the loan was taken not for agriculture. The entire liability came from agriculture. The minister and opposition leader failed to keep their promise” says Omana.
