THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The police's sudden arrest of Youth Congress state president Rahul Mankoottathil from his residence has sent shockwaves through UDF and Congress circles. This move to arrest him supposedly to address allegations in a criminal case has raised concerns about the government's approach toward opposition dissent in the foreseeable future. The Congress leadership expressed surprise over the swift action against Rahul while no similar legal measures were taken against SFI members protesting the governor.
Controversy ensued during a vigilance inspection targeting Mathew Kuzhalnadan who criticized the government and the Chief Minister over property acquisition. Rahul's arrest in the morning citing the destruction of police equipment valued at Rs 50,000 adds to the recent case implicating KPCC president K Sudhakaran in the Monson case.
Alleging collusion between the police and CPM, Sudhakaran claimed a conspiracy behind the arrest. UDF leaders like MM Hassan, Ramesh Chennithala and VM Sudheeran have voiced protest. Previously, the opposition leader faced financial charges signalling a worrisome trend in stifling dissent through police actions.
Observers note the police action may fuel opposition resolve to challenge the government while the opposition fears a strategy of using law enforcement to suppress dissenting voices.
