MUMBAI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the nation's longest sea bridge, 'Atal Setu,' today, showcasing India's engineering prowess to the world. The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) bridge spans 22 km connecting Mumbai and Navi Mumbai over the Thane Strait ranking as the world's 12th longest bridge. With a 27-meter width, it is a six-lane road boasting a total cost of 17,843 crores.
Named in honour of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the project, initiated by Modi in 2016 reached completion last month. Stretching 16.5 km over the sea, the bridge significantly reduces travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai now just 20 minutes compared to the previous one and a half hours.
Elevated 15 meters above sea level, the Atal Setu allows ships to pass beneath and supports a speed of 100 km per hour. It anticipates a daily traffic flow of 75,000 vehicles excluding bikes, autos and tractors. The bridge maintains a speed limit of 40 km/h on inclines and declines adhering to international standards for modern security measures.
Designed to withstand strong winds and lightning, the Atal Setu not only enhances connectivity but also serves as a vantage point for observing migratory birds. Commuters will be subject to a toll of 250 rupees per car with discounts available for regular passengers.
This engineering marvel promises to revolutionize travel, fostering economic growth in the region. The shortened commute time coupled with state-of-the-art safety features, positions the Atal Setu as a symbol of progress and efficiency in India's infrastructure landscape.
