suicide

ALAPPUZHA: The family of rice farmer KR Rajapan who committed suicide due to mounting debt has faced further hardships. On September 17, Rajapan consumed insecticide in Ambalapuzha North Panchayat Neelikattuchira. Adding to their sorrow, his son Prakashan undergoing cancer treatment died on December 21. The family, comprising Prakasan's mother Rugmini, wife Pramila and daughter Srilakshmi is burdened by a debt of Rs 5.5 lakh including agricultural loans.

Despite Rajappan's death, the family received minimal government assistance, limited to settling rice dues. Srilakshmi, the sole breadwinner works in a private firm in Ernakulam. Pramila is considering employment as a cook assistant at Alappuzha Medical College Hostel Mess.

Prakashan had taken a Rs 1.5 lakh loan from a private bank for farming, selling one acre of land for Rs 4 lakh to fund his cancer treatment. The family hopes to clear the farm loan by presenting Prakashan's death certificate. However, technical delays in the government's online services transition to K-Smart hinder this process. Prakashan passed away in a Kochi private hospital.

Congress leader VM Sudheeran stepped in after Rajapan's suicide providing Rs 3 lakh in aid. Prakashan's deteriorating health led to further expenses with his treatment costing over Rs 450,000 in November alone. The family's financial struggles are exacerbated by Rugmini's health issues requiring Rs 3,000 monthly for medication.

The bank loan is in the father's name. It is expected that exemption will be given on production of death certificate. 4 lakh rupees is also liable for the sale of land.
