THRISSUR: All 9 accused in the case of Youth Congress leader Lalji Kollannur's murder was acquitted by Additional Sessions Court Judge TK Minimol due to lack of evidence. Vaishakh, Rajesh, Prashant, Satheesan, Anup, Ravi, Rajendran, Sajeesh and Jomon, all natives of Ayanthol, were acquitted.
There were ten accused in total. Rajesh died during the trial. Key witnesses one to four were examined in 2015. Three of them gave statements against the prosecution before the magistrate. Meanwhile, on a petition filed by Lalji's wife, the High Court ordered a re-investigation, but not a single witness could be found.
On August 16, 2013, a gang on a bike hacked Lalji to death following disputes related to the Youth Congress elections. Lalji was the Vice President of Ayanthol Congress constituency and the Chairman of the Congress Minority Cell. Youth Congress leader Madhu Echarath was killed following the Ayanthol election dispute in April. Lalji is the elder brother of Premlal alias Premlal, the accused in this case. Madhu and Lalji, who belonged to the I group, fell out with each other during the Youth Congress organizational elections. Premji was attacked by Madhu and his gang after Madhu's nominee contested and won. Madhu was killed in this feud. The attack on Lalji was a continuation of this. The attack took place when Lalji, who lived in Laloor, had come to Ayyanthol to meet his parents. Adv. Vasavan, Adv. CB Sangeet, KN Ajayakumar and VR Jyotish appeared for the defendants.
