A writer becomes more relevant when he becomes a mirror of time. The world has contributed many such transformed writers. Some of them will reflect timeless truths through words, thereby becoming a mirror of eternal devotion. The writings of a writer who does not rise to that level will glow for a while and then fade away. Those who reflect eternal truths through writing are not afraid of positions of power. They have stormed against the wrong tendencies of power in their respective times. Kumaranashan said, "Change the rules yourself, if not, you will be changed by them" by pointing his fingers towards the thrones of the king and those who were in power at that time. Just like the poet said, all those thrones were washed away in the flow of time. It was replaced by democracy. Perceptions of power changed. Many evil tendencies of the new age affected the authorities. The leaders of the Communist Party came to power in Kerala through voting for the first time in the world after passing through many sacrifices. The party has remained strong in recent times because of its empathetic attitude towards the poor and those who had been kept out of power for centuries. However, some of the leaders of the Communist Party also have fallen, just as most of the leaders of all the ruling and opposition parties in India have fallen in the eddies of the new age of money flow. This was not the case in the days of EMS. MT Vasudevan Nair was pointing to this predicament. The fact that he made that criticism in the presence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan increases the relevance of those words. Besides, this is not a personal criticism of Pinarayi Vijayan or Narendra Modi as interpreted by many. If it is interpreted in this way, many faces can pretend to be innocent and hide behind that interpretation. The devaluation pointed out by MT has not only affected politics, it has affected writers, journalists, teachers, employees and indeed every living citizen in today's society. What really needs to be discussed is what can be done to recover from that deterioration. Those words point to the need for self-examination by all.
The bravery of the writer MT is that he was able to point this out when Pinarayi Vijayan, the symbol of the power of the state, was on the stage in this day and age when most of the writers are faithful only to the ruling class. That is to be appreciated. A writer cannot say this if he were in Russia. MT said that the shift of power to authoritarian styles in many cases should be corrected. Even before MT, many writers have made political criticisms in Kerala. There was a time when Kerala was waiting for the words of Sukumar Azhikode. Such criticism is the duty of a writer. Only the future will determine whether it will make changes or not. Let's hope that MT's meaningful words will be a reason to initiate positive changes.
