THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Due to the poor maintenance of the public toilets, the capital city has scored zero in the Swachh survey conducted by the central government. The Swachh survey is conducted under the Swachh Bharat scheme under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The survey found that the public toilets in the city are shabbily maintained.

It was also found that there are not enough public toilets in the city. The ranking of 305 in the last survey has dropped to 321 this time. It is a shame since the corporation mayor and her ilk were involved in some busy work to picture Thiruvananthapuram as a 'new haven' able to rival any top-tier city in India. This hype selling has now fallen flat with the survey results.

According to the survey report, the garbage disposal system of the city is lagging. Only seven percent of the garbage is collected at the doorstep of the city. The report proves that there is a huge failure in waste management. Garbage is piling on every nook and corner of the city and can’t be properly disposed of.

The introduction of kitchen bins too hasn’t made any difference. On the other hand, many kitchen bins are yet to be distributed to homes albeit allotting money in the budget for this purpose. The municipality has earlier found that 150 tons of waste was not disposed of properly out of 473 tons of waste generated in the city, but no serious actions were taken to curb this.

The municipality got 72 percent marks only for the cleaning of water bodies.
