It is the general policy of the Government not to retain in service officers of serious criminal character and disorder in the police force. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had also given an instruction to the police chief not to show any sympathy towards such people. But the proposal is still on paper. As soon as the action was launched, the centers of influence intervened and sabotaged it.
Eleven policemen, who were found to be serious criminals and were about to be dismissed, are still in service. There are saviors inside and outside the force to save police officers who have committed any serious criminal offense without even getting a scratch. Senior police officers will also be among them. Even though the number is very less, such worms in the police give a bad name to the entire force of half a lakh.
It is estimated that there are more than eight hundred people involved in criminal cases in the state police force. Even the accused in the rape case are among them. Many of them are involved in cases of serious nature such as harassment of women and children, dowry abuse, abuse of office, failure of duty, collaboration with criminal gangs. Some policemen are notorious for their links with gangster and mafia gangs. Organizational leadership is very strong in the police as in other branches of the government service. The leadership of the organization will come together to save even the accused police officer in the case of murder. Colleagues also help the policemen involved in the lock-up deaths that have taken place in many districts of the state.
If you pay close attention to the police brutality against the opposition protestors in the recent past, you will know the criminals among them. It is understandable that the police use force to disperse protesters who are preparing for violence. But even if there is no provocation to speak of, there is no action to control the policemen who jump on the protestors with a thirst for revenge. It can be said that the permission given to the police to do any violence against the people helps them in any deviant actions.
In the last seven years, it is estimated that twenty-five policemen have been dismissed for being involved in serious criminal offences. In reality, considering the nature of the crimes, many times more people should be expelled. For the reasons mentioned earlier, external interventions are the savior for many. There are those who repeat the same offense many times. It is the government's position that those who fall under this category should not be kept in the service under any circumstances. But it is seen that many people are still in the service despite being tainted. Special screening systems have been introduced to find regular troublemakers in the police force. The situation is that no action is taken on the report given by them.
