THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Nikhil Vinod, an 18-year-old commerce student at St. Thomas Higher Secondary School, shoulders the responsibility of caring for his autistic brother Appu and ailing mother Sheeba. Overcoming financial struggles after his father's sudden demise in 2015, Nikhil manages the household while excelling in his studies.
Nikhil's day starts at 4:30 AM as he pursues his passion for cooking learned from his mother. Juggling caregiving duties, school and personal aspirations, he takes on responsibilities like changing Appu's clothes and assisting with daily routines.
The family's financial hardship began with the loss of father Vinod who worked in the Gulf. The subsequent sale of their house led them to relocate to a rented place in Kesavadasapuram. Sheeba, now dealing with Parkinson's disease, relies on her income as a commission-based agent for a machine supply company.
Nikhil, determined and resilient, faces challenges with courage. He walks to the store to save money bargaining for groceries and using the savings to provide for his brother. Despite sleep deprivation, Nikhil remains committed to his studies often studying late into the night.
Reflecting on his struggles, Nikhil says, "There are no people without problems. But I like to be bold. I have locked my room and cried without anyone seeing me. But won't give up."
