CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi's remark that it was Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and not Mahatma Gandhi who won independence for India has become controversial. The derogatory reference to Gandhiji was made in Anna University's Netaji commemoration. Governor's remark was that the agitation led by Gandhiji died after 1942 and it was Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose who won freedom for India.
"After the Second World War began, the Non-Cooperation movement by the Indian National Congress had fizzled out. If you look at the history of the National freedom movement led by Mahatma Gandhi, after 1942 it was a non-event. Nothing happened as we were all busy fighting ourselves as the Muslim League under the leadership of Muhammad Ali Jinnah was fighting for a separation, a separate homeland. We were divided, and the British were enjoying it after 1942."
"India got independence in 1947 due to Netaji's activities. His military resistance caused the British to leave India. Netaji was feared by the British. His sacrifice should also be remembered and appreciated." The governor said that he is saying this after checking the historical records and people are not aware of this. There is a huge protest against the Governor's expression of opinion against Gandhiji. Various Dalit organizations have also come forward.
