KOCHI: The high court of Kerala registered a suo moto case in the suicide of a differently abled man who ended his life in dismay over not receiving the disability pension that was stalled for five long months. Permission of the Chief Justice has been sought for further action. Joseph alias Pappachan of Kozhikode Chakkittapara is the deceased.
On Tuesday afternoon, Joesph was found hanging from the window of his house by neighbours. Jinsy, one of Joseph's three daughters, is also disabled and bedridden. According to relatives, Joesph and his family struggled to make ends meet and the pension getting stalled added to the worries.
Joseph had complained to the Chakkittapara panchayat authorities that he would commit suicide in case of the disability pension getting further delayed. A complaint was filed on November 9 requesting that a pension be granted to him and his daughter Jinsy. Joseph's wife died a year ago. Other children: Ancy, Rincy.
It is also learned that a petition has been submitted to the Department Minister, District Collector and Peruvannamoozhy Police requesting that a pension be granted within 15 days.
At the same time, K Sunil, president of Chakkittapara gram panchayat said it was baseless to pile all the blame on Panchayat and said he was not aware of the financial difficulty endured by Joseph.
Meanwhile, BJP state president K Surendran alleged the state government of misusing the disability pension provided by the central government. He said that there are many people yet to receive the pension in Kerala, which has been timely distributed by the central government.
