THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a historic moment for Malayalis, 23-year-old Lt. H. Devika will lead the mixed Navy contingent at the Republic Day Parade in Delhi. Devika, the first Malayali to hold this position is one of three platoon commanders.
Born in Adoor and residing in Srikaryam, Devika's journey began when she watched the Republic Day parade with her Air Force officer father, Harikumar Namboothiri. Inspired, she dreamt of marching in uniform like her father. Now, posted at the Naval Cyber Office in Delhi, Devika, who celebrated her birthday yesterday is realizing that dream.
Devika, a Kendriya Vidyalaya alum, was active in NCC. Despite challenges balancing NCC, practicals and studies at Barton Hill Govt. Engineering College, she overcame obstacles. Initially aspiring to be an Air Force pilot Devika switched paths in 2018 becoming a sub-lieutenant in the Navy.
Her father, Harikumar, retired from the Air Force and now manages the Kottayam District Court. Mother Kavithadevi from Malayalapuzha and brother Sreesankar, a first-year engineering student will join the family in Delhi to witness the parade.
Devoting the last three months to rigorous 3 AM practice sessions in Delhi's bitter cold, Devika leads 144 members overcoming physical and mental challenges.
