MALE: The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the main opposition party of the Maldives, has gathered enough signatures to submit a motion to impeach anti-India Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu. The MDP also has the support of its allies, The Democrats.

Both parties have a total of 55 seats in the 87-member parliament. They control the Parliament. A total of 34 members, including representatives from both the MDP and Democrats, have given their support to the motion for the impeachment of the president that was disrupted yesterday over chaos in the Maldivian parliament.

MDP is the party of pro-India ex-president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Some MDP members said that Muizzu's anti-India stance was fueling the impeachment motion.

Members of the ruling coalition (Progressive Party of Maldives and Muizzu's People's National Congress) had clashed with opposition MPs in Parliament the other day. The conflict took place after the opposition denied approval to four members of the Muizzu cabinet.
