ALAPPUZHA: Death threats reached V G Sreedevi, the judge who gave the controversial death sentence to all accused in the murder of Ranjith Sreenivasan. Judge V G Sreedevi was strongly critiqued on social media by many people having affiliation with the banned PFI while some others came out with blatant comments and death threats accusing her of showing bias.

Minding the increasing death threats, the security has been beefed up for the judge. Five policemen, including a sub-inspector, are included in the protection squad. Mavelikkara Additional Sessions Court on Tuesday sentenced all 15 accused to death in the murder of BJP leader Ranjith Sreenivasan.

Apart from the security measures, the police and cyber cell are also monitoring the accounts that have raised threats. Social media accounts that have supported such death threats will also be monitored. Police are also keeping note of the issue spiralling into a communal one and will do everything needed to maintain harmony.

Terming it as a rarest of rare cases, the court sentenced all accused to death which is unprecedented in Kerala’s legal history. On December 19, 2021, Ranjith Srinivasan while entering his house in Alappuzha Vellakinar was hacked to death in front of his family members.

Popular Front activists Nizam, Ajmal, Anoop, Muhammad Aslam, Salam Ponnad, Abdul Kalam, Safaruddin, Munshad, Jaseeb Raja, Nawaz, Shamir, Naseer, Zakir Hussain, Shaji Poovathinkal and Shernaz Ashraf were found guilty for the crime commited.
