NEW DELHI: As part of the major announcements in the final budget ahead of the Lok Sabha election, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the 'Pradhana Mantri Suryodaya Yojna' scheme to provide solar panels to one crore homes. Reportedly, users can save up to Rs. 15,000-18,000 per year on electricity bills through this scheme. This scheme was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January.

PM Modi had said that a big campaign would be launched to encourage the installation of solar panels on the roofs of houses. It is expected that 300 units of electricity can be saved through this. The plan is to install solar in more than one crore houses of 'poor and middle class' families. The Prime Minister also said that this will help consumers to reduce their electricity bills.

There is no additional land requirement, or no additional need for transmission and distribution lanes. Improved voltage and reduced carbon emissions are key benefits of this project. Customers interested in applying for this project should apply through the project developers after obtaining necessary permissions.
