WAYANAD: Wild elephant that entered the inhabited area of Mananthavadi was shot with tranquilizer by the mission team. The team fired the tranquilizer when the elephant came out of the banana plantation. For the last one and a half hours, efforts were being made to shoot the elephant with tranquilizer.

The group reached Mananthavadi as per the order issued in connection with the tranquilizing the wild elephant. The order says that the wild elephants should be tried to be chased away into the forest using Kumki elephants and if that is not possible, they should be captured using tranquilizer shots and released in the Bandipur forest area in the presence of the Karnataka Forest Department. The order in this regard was issued by the State Principal Chief Forest Conservator (Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden.

In the current situation, it is difficult to chase away the wild elephant, so the authorities are trying to capture it with drug shots and release it in Bandipur. The locals were protesting about the delay in issuing the order. The elephant is now stationed in the banana plantation. Kumki elephants named Vikram and Surya have come to lock the elephant.
