MANANTHAVADI: 'Tanneer' held the local residents captive for twelve and a half hours. Despite the tense situation, no harm was reported.

Authorities took swift action by declaring a curfew, shutting down schools and restricting people from leaving their homes. The elephant was tranquilized at 5:35 pm, and control was regained with the assistance of Kunki elephants Vikram, Surya and Konni Surendran.

Plans are underway to transport the elephant in an ambulance to the Bandipur forest area in Karnataka, where it will be released. The elephant had previously been stationed in a coffee plantation in Belur, Hassan district, Karnataka. It was drugged, fitted with a radio collar and transferred to the Nagarhola forest before reaching Mananthavadi.

The elephant initially arrived at Payode, Edavaka panchayat around 5 am. After crossing the Kabani river due to local residents making noise, it entered the Mananthavadi Municipal Corporation limits. This led to the closure of government offices including the Mini Civil Station, Taluk Office, Sub-Treasury, Court and Police Station.

District Collector Dr. Renuraj issued prohibitory orders in Mananthavadi city and Edavaka panchayat. The elephant lingered near a swamp for hours prompting authorities to halt traffic and close shops and markets. Some locals threw stones resulting in the elephant charging at them. After 10 pm, Chief Wildlife Warden G. Dinesh authorized the use of sedation, administered twice by biologist Vishnu.
