THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In the past month, 2,32,148 people sought treatment for fever in government hospitals, many experiencing persistent dry cough post-recovery. This condition, known as post-viral cough affects adults and children alike.
Despite causing discomfort, doctors emphasize that post-viral cough is not a severe ailment. However, individuals with weakened immune systems, those exposed to frosty mornings or intense sun and those in cold working environments face a heightened challenge with coughing.
Experts advise against self-medication, emphasizing the importance of prescribed medications. Strong antibiotics are deemed unnecessary for viral coughs. Coughing may result from the body expelling lingering infections or viral effects, causing irritation.
For those without shortness of breath, regular steam inhalation is recommended. Additionally, rinsing the mouth with a mixture of salt and turmeric in warm water can provide relief. If symptoms persist, seeking medical attention is advised.
Dr V Sebi, Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Indian Medicine stresses that a strong cough typically develops after the first two days of fever. Timely and appropriate medical intervention is crucial.
