MALDIVES: The Maldivian government has sought an official explanation for the Indian Coast Guard's entry on three Maldivian boats that were fishing in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Maldives. The government of Mohamed Muizzu has sought an explanation from India while the India-Maldives diplomatic dispute continues to escalate. India has not yet officially responded to the incident.
The incident took place on January 31. Maldives alleges that the Indian Coast Guard stopped the fishing boats inside the EEZ. It is also alleged that the Indian Coast Guard entered and inspected the boats without seeking permission from the concerned authorities. The Maldivian government also pointed out that this is a violation of international maritime laws. The Government of Maldives through the Ministry of External Affairs has informed that the Government of India should give a comprehensive explanation on the incident. In a statement, Maldives says that only Indian Coast Guard Ship 246 and Indian Coast Guard Ship 253 are responsible for interrogating fishing boats.
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu had said that the Indian Army should be withdrawn from the Maldives by March 15. According to government data, there are currently 88 Indian soldiers in the Maldives. Diplomatic relations between Maldives and India have soured over tourism. Meanwhile, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu visited China. It is reported that Maldives has strengthened its position after his five-day visit to China. Mohamed Muizzu came to power by raising the slogan 'India Out' in the elections.
