THRISSUR: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge asserted that a victory in Kerala equates to a nationwide triumph for the Congress party, emphasizing that flags of BJP or other regional parties should not fly in the state. Kharge made these remarks while inaugurating the Mahajanasabha at Thekkinkad Maidan, marking the commencement of the Lok Sabha election campaign, attended by a vast crowd.
Accusing the central government of undermining democratic institutions, Kharge criticized the use of enforcement agencies such as ED, CBI, and the Income Tax Department against opposition leaders. He highlighted the widespread presence of Congress across the country, contrasting it with other parties limited to specific regions.
Kharge pointed out the Modi government's impact on minorities and women, citing rising unemployment among the youth. He endorsed Nehru's vision of a collaborative private and public sector economy, lauding the role of PSUs in providing employment to millions, particularly benefiting backward and Dalit sections.
Addressing economic concerns, Kharge criticized inflation's continual rise, alleging write-offs for monopolies and the affluent, with subsidies favoring the rich. He condemned those using religion to buy votes, labeling them as anti-women and minorities, accusing them of shielding attackers and bringing attention to the shameful incidents of rape and violence in Manipur.
Kharge expressed disappointment with the central government's inaction against the ongoing violence in Manipur over nine months, noting the Prime Minister's absence in the region. Meanwhile, KC Venugopal celebrated his 61st birthday by cutting a cake at the venue.
