Attingal is one such constituency in Kerala where election results can sway in any direction, leaving little clue for anyone to guess. In 1967 congress big man R Shankar stumbled in front of CPM's K Anirudhan.

CPM's Susheela Gopalan, who made her debut in the constituency in 1989, lost to Thalekunnil Basheer in one major upset. Attingal, touted to be a left bastion saw a sudden Congress wave when Vayalar Ravi, won with a huge majority in 1971 and 1977.

Anirudhan Sampath, a three-time representative from the same constituency lost his footing for the first time in history in 2019. This loss was a glimpse into how tentative the constituency was in terms of election. The people here don’t vote keeping in mind the emerging trend and thus their voting sense remains unpredictable. The biggest surprise thus came in 2019 when BJP leader Shobha Surendran garnered more than two lakh votes. It was an unbelievable feat considering the uphill task BJP had in front of them.

Considering this big sway in votes, BJP this time will dedicate more time to reap benefits from Attingal. Sitting MP Adoor Prakash is Congress’s first choice for the constituency, while A A Rahim will be the lucky pick from CPM. The name of youth leader Sabarinathan is also being heard in the congress camp. Vellamvelly Muraleedharan, the present Union Minister of State for External Affairs & Parliamentary Affairs of India is readying moves to contest from Attingal this time for BJP. CPM District Secretary V. Joy also stands a chance this time in Attingal.

All the seven assembly consistencies in Attingal have elected Left MLAs. Aruvikkara, a congress fort also fell into LDF's hands during the last assembly elections. This could provide a stimulus for the left party considering their odds in the elections. However, nothing is certain when it comes to Attingal. The most alarming fact for the opposition, both left and Congress is the growing acceptance of the BJP among the populace in this terrain. From just 7 % vote share BJP is expected to get 24% this time.

BJP has moved to field Union Minister V. Muraleedharan in Attingal, who is active in the constituency and has an office near Attingal Market. Every month, the minister makes sure to fly down from Delhi to monitor the work.

It was in Attingal in Kerala where the Akshadham from Ram temple reached most homes, due to some meticulous ground work done by BJP cadres. CPM will be hell-bent on wresting back power in Attingal and may also consider fielding V Joy, who is considered a safer option than A A Rahim.

Out of 16 elections, left candidates won 11 times while the constituency supported the Congress only five times. Attingal Lok Sabha Constituency includes Varkala, Attingal, Chirayinkeezhu, Nedumangad, Vamanapuram, Aruvikkara and Kattakkada assembly constituencies.
