THRISSUR: Kolakkadan Kuttykrishnan, owned by Nasser from Malappuram Areekode, suffered a crushed left tusk and a slight injury to the right horn in a hit-and-run accident. The incident occurred yesterday morning at Andipillikavu on the Moothakunnam-Paravur national highway.
The elephant was being transported in a lorry after participating in a festival at Ernakulam temple. The collision took place when a gas lorry traveling on the narrow road failed to stop. Startled by the speeding vehicle, the elephant turned its head causing its horn to strike the gas lorry's cabin grill leading to the elephant falling inside the lorry.
Following the accident, the injured elephant was taken to Thrissur Chavakkad Mannathala for emergency treatment by a team led by Elephant therapist Dr PB Giridas. Once the wound heals, an artificial horn will be implanted. Meanwhile, forest officials collected the severed horn and once the elephant recovers from fatigue, it will be relocated to the hills for rehabilitation.
