PUDUCHERRY: With news spreading about the discovery of a cancer-causing chemical, the popular cotton candy sweet has been banned in Puducherry Union territory. However, sellers who have quality certificates from the Food Safety Department can continue to sell cotton candy.
Food safety officials in Puducherry have detected the presence of Rhodamine B in cotton candy. Puducherry Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan issued a notice in this regard. Rhodamine B is a chemical dye commonly used for industrial purposes. It is used to colour matchsticks, vegetables, etc. Cotton candy also contains this chemical which causes liver diseases, tumors and even cancer when it reaches the body.
“Those who have not obtained the quality assurance certificate should immediately obtain it from the Food Safety Department. Those who have the certificate can continue selling cotton candy. Strict action will be taken against those who violate the law. We have directed officials to check shops selling cotton candy.
The sooner you get the quality assurance certificate; the sooner you can start selling. Don't give sweets containing artificial colours to children. Parents should pay attention to this.” – said an order issued by the Governor.
