AGRA: The Rajkot Test against England will be remembered for the debut of two young players. The first name is Mumbai batsman Sarfaraz Khan. Everyone knows about the star's entry to the Indian team. The life story of Dhruv Jurel, another young player who has made his debut, is full of hurdles and challenges.
Dhruv Jurel's pursuit of cricket was initially disliked by his father, who was a Kargil war veteran. Nem Chand, who retired as a Havildar in the Indian Army, wanted his son to become a government officer. During his school days, Dhruv used to go to the cricket ground escaping the watchful eye of his father.
Jurel, who was playing cricket in Agra, was once advised by his father, 'No one in our family plays cricket. I am very worried about your future'. None of this kept Dhruv away from cricket.
The star, who made his debut as a wicketkeeper for the Indian Test team at the age of 23, once struggled to even buy a cricket kit when he was young. When asked for money to buy a cricket kit, his father advised him to quit playing. On that day, his mother sold her earrings and paid Rs 8,000 to buy him a cricket kit.
Dhruv himself revealed in an interview that his father's opposition decreased later and he started supporting him as his son started conquering heights one by one in cricket.
The young star started his career by playing in the under-14 and 16 teams in Uttar Pradesh. The player was also selected as the vice-captain of the Indian team in the 2020 U-19 World Cup. The youngster, who plays for IPL Rajasthan Royals, shone as a finisher last season.
Wicketkeeper-batsman KS Bharat's poor performance in the first two Tests paved the way for the UP man to join the Indian team. Former Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik is the one who presented the debut cap to the youngster. The young star also performed well in his Test debut scoring 46 runs in the first innings.
