NEW DELHI: The post-mortem process of Shubhkaran Singh (23), a young farmer who was killed in the Delhi Chalo agitation, has been delayed. The organizations are of the position that the post-mortem will be allowed only after taking action against the minor Haryana Police officers. Discussions with the top officials of Punjab Police are ongoing at night. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had said that appropriate action would be taken after the post-mortem. The agitation has been halted till today. Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda also reiterated yesterday that he should be ready for a consensus discussion.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav expressed grief over the incident. Congress demanded the registration of an FIR against Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij. The BJP responded that it was an unfortunate incident.
Meanwhile, social media platform 'X' has expressed its opposition to the central government's proposal to remove posts and accounts in favor of the strike. It can be blocked. However, it has been clarified that freedom of expression should be given to such posts as well.
Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha farmer organizations are leading the strike. The joint Kisan Morcha may also join this. A six-member committee was formed to coordinate the organizations. With this, it is estimated that the strike will increase in strength. The joint Kisan Morcha general body met yesterday and demanded a judicial inquiry into the killing of the farmer. A compensation of Rs 1 crore should be given to the family of the slain farmer. Today will be Kari Day. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Haryana Chief Minister Manoharlal Khattar, and Home Minister Anil Vij should resign. A tractor parade will be held on the 26th. Farmers' Maha Panchayat will be organized on March 14 at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the cabinet decision to increase the fair price of sugarcane is historic and the central government is committed to measures for the welfare of farmers. Modi X noted that the move would benefit crores of sugarcane farmers. The new fair price will be 340 per quintal for the 2024-25 sugarcane season. The new fair price will be effective from October 1 this year.
The Haryana-Punjab High Court Bar Association will boycott the courts today in protest against the death of the farmer and in support of the strike. Advocate Harinder Palsingh filed a petition in the Haryana-Punjab High Court seeking a judicial inquiry. It will be considered on February 29. Journalist Neel Bhalinder Singh approached the High Court seeking a case against the Haryana Police. According to the petition, part of the shells fell on his head and injured him. Anil Kumar, a lawyer from Panchkula, Haryana, filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking to stop the Delhi Chalo agitation.
